cultural value tierra del fuego

The native people of the island of Tierra del Fuego’s were the Selk'nam, who called their land "Karukinka".

Successive settlements, started by the end of 1800 on Tierra del Fuego, were dedicated to mining, livestock and forestry activities. They have left an important cultural heritage at Karukinka, reflected in the long, continuous, diverse and rich human history in the region.

Karukinka conserves a great portion of the historical heritage of the present community in Tierra del Fuego and Magallanes. In honor of the Selk'nam, the native people of the island of Tierra del Fuego, we have called this land “Karukinka” just as they did in the past.
