WCS will provide basic ecological information on the guanacos inhabiting Karukinka and adjacent lands. To this effect, we are evaluating the species’ ecology, its migratory patterns on Tierra del Fuego, habitat selection, and effect on lenga forest regeneration, as well as the health of the population.

The guanaco population on Tierra del Fuego is the result of a long and successful population recovery program promoted by the CONAF since the 1970’s. The current size of the guanaco population is a matter of concern for inhabitants of Tierra del Fuego in terms of the effect that it might have on cattle and forest regeneration. It is hoped that their numbers can be managed in a way that will permit these processes and at the same time retain a healthy population of guanacos on Tierra del Fuego.
