America’s southernmost ecosystems are highly
disturbed by the presence of beavers, Castor
canadensis, an exotic rodent that was introduced
into the archipelago in 1946. Today, this species
has reached South America’s mainland, threatening
the survival of natural and productive ecosystems
in southernmost South America.
WCS, jointly
with relevant Chilean, Argentinean, regional,
national, and even international actors is developing
a Program for the restoration of Patagonian ecosystems
to their condition prior to the release of the
American beaver. To this effect, the beaver must
be eradicated from its current artificial distribution
range in the southernmost tip of South America,
and the environments affected by this exotic species
recovered or restored.
